Register and change schemas
Register a schema, set the compatibility level of a subject, and delete schema versions.
The Schema registry page lists the subjects of the cluster's Schema Registry. Each change needs a cluster with writable: true and the privilege the section names. To read the text of a schema, you need schema_text.
Find a subject by schema ID
Type a schema ID in Search subjects and schema IDs…. The list keeps the subject that holds that ID, and opening it shows the version with that ID. A record also links to its schema from the Schema field of its side sheet.
Register a schema
You need register_schemas.
- On Schema registry, select Register schema.
- Enter the Subject, such as
orders-value. - Pick the type: Avro, JSON, or Protobuf.
- Enter the Schema.
- Optional: if the schema imports others, select Add reference and enter the name it imports, the Subject, and the Version of each.
- Select Register.
To register a new version of a subject, open the subject and select Register a new version. The sheet opens with the schema of the version you were reading. The registry checks the schema against the compatibility level of the subject. When the subject already holds the same schema, the registry keeps its version and registers nothing.
Set the compatibility level
You need set_compatibility.
- Open the subject and select Change compatibility.
- Pick the Level and select Save.
The registry checks each new schema against this level. Schemas it already holds stay as they are.
Delete a schema version
You need delete_schemas.
- Open the subject at the version, and select Delete this version.
- Pick Version N or All versions.
- Optional: turn on Delete permanently.
- Type the subject to confirm, and select Delete.
A soft delete removes the version from the subject, and the registry keeps its schema ID, so records that carry the ID still decode. A permanent delete removes the schema ID too, and records that carry it no longer decode.
