Manage ACLs and SCRAM users

Create and delete ACL bindings, and add, change, or delete SCRAM credentials.

The ACLs and Users pages need the acls privilege. Each change needs a cluster with writable: true and the privilege the section names. These pages also need Kafka permissions for the Kafka user of klens. See Kafka permissions for klens.

Create an ACL binding

You need create_acls. The page offers changes only when the cluster runs an authorizer.

  1. On ACLs, select Create ACL.
  2. Enter the Principal, such as User:alice.
  3. Optional: change the Host. * matches every host.
  4. Pick Allow or Deny.
  5. Pick the Resource type and the Pattern. Literal matches the name exactly. Prefixed matches every name that starts with it.
  6. Enter the Name. * matches every resource of the type. A cluster binding always names kafka-cluster.
  7. Pick one or more Operations. The list holds only the operations valid for the resource type.
  8. Select Create ACL. Each operation you picked becomes its own binding.

Delete an ACL binding

You need delete_acls. Select the trash icon on the row, check the sentence that describes the binding, and select Delete ACL.

Add a SCRAM user

You need set_scram_credentials.

  1. On Users, select Add user.
  2. Enter the User, and pick SCRAM-SHA-256 or SCRAM-SHA-512.
  3. Enter the Password.
  4. Optional: change the Iterations. Kafka takes 4096 to 16384, and klens uses 4096 by default.
  5. Select Save.

klens salts the password with a random 32-byte salt and sends Kafka only the salted hash, so the password never reaches the broker or a log. To change a password, select the key icon on the user's row. Clients need the new password from their next login.

Delete a SCRAM credential

You need delete_scram_credentials. Select the trash icon on the user's row. When the user has two credentials, pick the Mechanism. Select Delete credential. The user can no longer log in with that mechanism.
